Ensemble Arava consists of four musicians, on three instruments, of two nationalities, who wish to share their love for Baroque music with the rest of the world. Plenty of music has been written for soprano, violin and continuo, but it is not heard often enough. It is our aim to bring this music to life.
All of us enjoy alternating between being chamber music partners and a soloist, and this is reflected in our diverse programs.
Aiming for an atmosphere where artist and audience can connect on a personal level, we guide through our concerts with creative explanations that allow the public to enter into the world of the music they are listening to.
In Frankfurt, Germany, we were awarded with the first prize as well as the audience prize at the First International Competition for Concert Explanation and Presentation 2017. Our ensemble was praised both for its high-quality artistic level and its creative presentation.
In 2017 we were awarded a special prize at the H.I.F. Biber – Fiori Musicali Competition in Austria, a concert invitation to the Konzerthaus Vienna to perform at the Resonanzen Festival in 2018. In 2015, we performed in the festival Día de la Música in Seville, Spain as musical ambassadors for the UNESCO City of Music, Hanover, Germany.
Arava is Hebrew for Willow as well as Wilderness, thus joining two contrasting images: The delicate willow being a symbol for the annual rejuvenation of spring and wilderness standing for the untamed and unpredictable element of nature.
Einat Aronstein, Voice | Israeli soprano Einat Aronstein performs across Europe and Israel. Her acting talent goes well with her passion for opera singing. She is also a sought after soloist for oratorios as well as Lied and opera recitals.
Sophie Wedell, Violin | Sophie Wedell is a freelance musician on Baroque and modern violin. Her studies took her from Stuttgart to Hannover and finally to The Hague, where she currently resides. She enjoys performing solo and in chamber orchestras, but her favorite is chamber music groups, like Ensemble Arava.
Nora Matthies, Violoncello | Nora Matthies is a freelance musician living in Hannover, Germany. Since completing her studies in modern and Baroque cello, she has been focusing on the performance practice of various eras, especially Baroque and contemporary music.
Avinoam Shalev, Harpsichord | Born in Israel, Avinoam studied keyboard instrument performance and musicology in Tel Aviv and Hannover, Germany. He performs chamber and orchestral music as well as solo recitals in Europe and Israel. His home base is in the Netherlands, but he often finds himself on t
